What’s The Difference?

What’s The Difference?

I was recently asked how Clearly Filtered compares to other similar water filters. It’s a very valid question and I’d like to share my findings with you.

Common Big Names

Brita and PUR are both very common names in the water filter game. But they are not even on the same level as Clearly Filtered. Brita and PUR filtration systems focus on water taste over water quality. Sure, the two can go hand in hand, but if quality is not the focus, a lot of undesirable things will still remain. These brands have great accessibility and are easy to find in many stores. However, they are not worth purchasing if you are truly concerned about toxic particulates in your water.

Berkey is another well-known name in water filtration. So you’d think it would be easy to find their website with a quick internet search. Not so much. On just the first page of search results, I found 4 different websites that all claim to be Berkey. I have no idea which is the real manufacturer, so I could gather good information. They seem to have a lot of internet retailers.
Berkey is by far the most expensive water filtration system I have seen.
The containers look very nice to keep on your counter – a tall, shiny metal canister.
They claim to remove a multitude of contaminants from water. They also sell special additional filters to remove fluoride. However, these filters have been known to leach aluminum as a byproduct of the fluoride removal.
There are also several negative reports from independent studies done on their filters.
For me, there are too many red flags to proceed with Berkey.

The Competition

ZeroWater and Aquagear are the only filters that I have found that could actually be comparable to Clearly Filtered.

In all honesty, I did not learn about ZeroWater until after I had already been using and loving Clearly Filtered.
ZeroWater has a very impressive contaminant removal list when compared to Brita and PUR. However, it is not as powerful as Clearly Filtered.
ZeroWater is easier to purchase as it is found in store at big retailers and is less expensive.
I have not been able to find information about where their products are produced. Clearly Filtered is made in the USA.
ZeroWater filters last up to 40 gallons each. The length of effectiveness dramatically decreases if the water being filtered has high levels of contaminants (see chart below). Clearly Filtered are designed to last for about 100 gallons of water.

Personally, I didn’t see the point in downgrading from nearly perfect water, but ZeroWater filters may be an okay choice if you need something in a pinch, just want to reduce some of your toxin exposure.

I also just learned about Aquagear as I began to write this post.
Aquagear is seems similar to Clearly Filtered. The filters are even made in the US.
They have a filter recycling program, which is different (and a good idea).
Aquagear currently only offers pitchers, and not water bottles and under sink systems like Clearly Filtered.
Their toxin filtering is quite impressive. I found this pdf chart on their site and decided to compare it to Clearly Filtered.
It is competitive, but Clearly Filtered still does a better job filtering out contaminants.

Conclusion

To recap- Clearly Filtered is my top choice.
It does a very thorough job removing over 365 contaminants. Clearly Filtered is the only brand that does not use aluminum in its filter and is still able to remove fluoride.
It is a USA-made product and the filters last for months. They offer pitchers, water bottles and under-the-sink filtration systems.
They even offer subscription programs that save you $$!
