PFAS In Your Water

PFAS In Your Water

🚨 The EPA recently released new health advisory levels for lifetime PFAS exposure. The City of Green Bay’s water currently far exceeds LIFETIME exposure levels of PFOA and PFOS. This chart was created by the Green Bay Water Utility.

The EPA has no plans to enforce managing these levels, nor does it stop polluters from discharging PFAS.

Should We Be Concerned?

PFAS are perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances. They are also known as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the environment. Instead, they just circulate in the environment and accumulate in the blood of animals.

These are the same chemicals that are featured in the films The Devil We Know and Dark Waters, where DuPont was pumping their waste products into the local water.

Risk Effects

PFAS exposure is associated with increased asthma, birth defects, cancer, high cholesterol levels, hormone disruption, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, decreased immunity and liver damage. The effects may reach well beyond this.

Other Sources

These toxic compounds are also found in wide array of products.
This includes firefighting foam, Teflon, dental floss, nail polish and other personal care products (check for terms such as “fluoro” or ”perfluoro”), Scotchguard, waterproof and stain-resistant fabrics, and other non-stick coated products.
Surfaces that touch our food such as non-stick pans, microwave popcorn, fast food wrappers and take out containers are other large contributors.
The consumption of animals who have been exposed to these chemicals also adds to our toxic burden.

Mothers pass some of their PFAS load onto their children while pregnant and breastfeeding.

Stay Safe

What can you do to protect yourself and your family? Avoid these contaminated products when ever you can, and drink clean water from your own Clearly Filtered system. Clearly Filtered water filters remove up to 99.8% of PFAS.
