What Is Red and Near Infrared (NIR) Light Therapy?

Red and near-infrared light are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, and more specifically, part of the spectrum of light emitted by the sun. These wavelengths of light are “bioactive” in humans.
Below is a chart outlining the electromagnetic spectrum:
Electromagnetic waves range from 0.0001 nanometers (gamma waves) all the way to over meters (radio waves).
If you remember high school physics, when you pass white light through a prism it separates out the different colors based on their wavelengths (ROYGBIV). Only a tiny part of this spectrum (roughly 400nm to 700nm) is actually visible to the human eye.
At the highest end of the visible light spectrum is red light, which goes from a little over 600nm to approximately 700nm. Above the visible light spectrum is near-infrared (NIR) from about 700nm to a little over 1,100nm.
It is specifically these red and near-infrared wavelengths that have amazing effects on our bodies. Most research showing benefits of red light and near-infrared light have used wavelengths in the ranges of 630-680nm and 800-880nm.
There have now been literally thousands of studies done in both animals and humans. Overall, red and near infrared light has been repeatedly shown to have positive effects on cell function in animal and human studies and aid in improving a wide range of conditions.
Near-infrared (NIR) and red light therapy devices have been FDA-approved for several purposes so far, including hair-loss reversal, anti-aging, acne, wound healing, pain relief, fat loss, and more! This is worth noting because it proves the abundance of research demonstrating benefits – the therapy has to be proven safe and effective in numerous trials in order to gain FDA approval.
It’s all about PENETRATION
Most wavelengths of light (UV, blue, green, yellow, etc.) are unable to penetrate into the body – instead they stay in the layers of the skin.
However as the picture below shows, red and near-infrared light are able to penetrate deeper into the human body and are able to reach the cells, tissues, blood, nerves, into the bones and even into the brain!
The benefits of red light: Red light between 600-700nm offer benefits for skin texture and tone, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, promoting collagen production and generally rejuvenating the appearance of skin and hair.
The benefits of near-infrared light: Near-infrared light (NIR) 700nm – 1100nm. penetrates deeper into the tissues to assist with wound healing, muscle recovery, nerve injury and joint pain.
How does Red Light Therapy Work?
RED LIGHT BOOSTS CELLULAR ENERGY PRODUCTION
The most well studied mechanism of action surrounding red and near infrared light therapy is increased MITOchondrial energy production in the cells. MITOchondria are tiny organelles that are the energy power plants of all the cells in our body. Red and near infrared light therapy helps the MITOchondria create more of that energy.
The specific photons found in red and near infrared light interact with a photoreceptors within our cells called cytochrome c oxidase. This interaction stimulates the mitochondria in our cells to use oxygen more efficiently, which allows the mitochondria to produce more ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Adenosine triphosphate is a complex organic chemical that provides energy to drive many processes in living cells, e.g. muscle contraction, nerve impulse propagation, and chemical synthesis. Found in all forms of life, ATP is often referred to as the “molecular unit of currency” of intracellular energy transfer. When our cells have more energy, they simply perform better and the body follows suit!
The Proven Benefits of Red and Near Infrared Light Therapy
We’ll dive deeper into each of these in future articles, but the proven benefits of red and near infrared light therapy include:
- Promotes wound healing and tissue repair
- Supports collagen production / anti-aging
- Reduces swelling and inflammation ( pain)
- Improves joint health
- Improves physical performance, muscle recovery and energy levels
- Increases melatonin / improves sleep
Zooming back from it all it is not surprising that red and near infrared light deliver such a myriad of benefits. Our evolutionary ancestors spent many hours each and every day outdoors receiving these beneficial wavelengths of light from the sun. Modern humans with our homes, transport and office spaces are extremely “mal-illuminated”.
Mito Red Light devices deliver clinically relevant doses of these beneficial wavelengths of light allowing you to conveniently “supplement” red light therapy at home on your own schedule.

Camping Essentials
Camping Essentials

I LOVE camping! I’d go every weekend if I could. That said, I’m always looking for ways to improve the experience. I’ve been compiling my camping essentials for many years now, and I’d like to share a few with you today.
This past weekend, my daughter and I went on a girls-only camping trip. I typically “rustic camp”, meaning we don’t have electric or water hookups at the site. Even though we use very traditional sites, I still bring plenty of “essential” gear to have a comfy time. Here are my top favorites from this trip-
Water
While we didn’t have a water spigot directly at our site, we did have access to one that was shared for all campers. Let’s just say the water that came out of that hose wasn’t totally clear. I was very glad to have brought my Clearly Filtered water pitcher with me! It was a really good test to showcase the amazing filtration power of Clearly Filtered. I actually felt comfortable drinking the water we collected once it had been filtered.
Dishwashing
Speaking of water, I also spent a fair amount of time using it to wash the dishes at our campsite. I use a collapsable bin and fill it with water that has been slightly heated in a percolator over the campfire. Then, I add a little soap and scrub with a dishcloth. This time, I had the opportunity to use my new Norwex netted dish cloth! I was very excited to try it out. The small holes create a lot of small ridges that effectively scrub the dishes. Due to a lack of fabric surface, it also doesn’t hold on to much food debris, oil, or water either! It’s lightweight, was very easy to clean out, and dried quite quickly when hung on the clothes line. I definitely recommend the Norwex netted cloth for camping!
Fun
After getting set up, cooking over the fire, and cleaning up from that, we went and explored the campground. The place was well-kept, and very kid-friendly. There were two separate playgrounds, a disc golf course and a private pond with a beach. We even rented a pedal boat and took a few laps around the pond. The kids really enjoyed it!
Bugs
While we did have a great time, we unfortunately also found ourselves bitten by mosquitos and one camper even got stung by a yellow stripey frenemy. I realize that insect repellent doesn’t keep all the pests away, so I had purchased a Bug Bite Thing a while back. It’s a wonderful and compact extraction tool that saw a fair amount of use this weekend! We used it to pull mosquito venom out of our bites, and it was thankfully very helpful after the hornet (or wasp?) sting as well! She told me the majority of the pain went away instantly!
Bed Time
When it was time for bed, our favorite product to use was Earthley’s Good Night Lotion. The magnesium in the lotion helps melt away all the struggles of the day, balance blood sugar, and allows your muscles to relax. It was especially helpful to use on the children, which allowed them to settle down and easily drift to sleep. It’s very effective when you’re trying to sleep at home, too! We use it almost every night.
What are your favorite amenities when you go camping? I’m always looking for new gear, so please let me know!

Norwex & Our Health
If you’re sensitive to chemicals like me, you know how important it is to use only the cleanest products. I run my own natural cleaning business and many people ask me what products I actually use. It’s a very valid question, considering there are many greenwashed brands out there that aren’t all that clean, like certain “wellness” companies …
Well, it really can’t get any CLEANER than just pure water and a reusable cloth! That’s why Norwex products are so great! Made of high quality microfiber, they easily remove dust, dirt and 99% of bacteria from a variety of surfaces using mechanical action. My favorites are the envirocloth, window cloth, dust wand, and mop.
Norwex is safe for the whole family! Even kids can get in on the cleaning 🙂
Many of the cloths also have exclusive BacLock technology. Incredibly fine silver threads are woven in to the cloth to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungus. This allows them to stay fresh longer between machine washings.
The Environment
Even better, the company is also environmentally conscious. This goes beyond the fact that their cloths are multi-use and machine washable.
While paper towels are bleached and have limited use, cleaning chemicals hurt our health and the environment, and sponges need frequent replacement, Norwex cloths are truly designed to last for years! Norwex has a 2 year warranty on their microfiber. Also, some of their products are made with recycled materials, up to 100% recycled material!
Most recently, the Norwex Microfiber Recycling Program was launched to allow customers to responsibly dispose of their microfiber at the end of its long life.
